| The REFUGIO INFANTIL SANTA ESPERANZA, A.C. (R.I.S.E.), is a home for abandoned children and those who were removed from violent domestic situations where there had been abuse. Presently we care for 50 children; infants in cribs, todlers and children from 6 to 12 years old. Our adolescents currently live in a separate house. All of them attend secondary school and we hope to support them until they are able to leave the Refuge. All children attend school outside the refuge (14 in preschool, 22 in primary and 4 in secondary schools). Since we began, more than eight years ago, we have had the good fortune to support more than 250 transitory children while they remained with us for a short period of time. | | | Photos by Angel Vazquez and Sol Mtz. Maciel | | Minor children are legally brought to us by the Government and are left with us to care for their physical needs. Two nuns, Madre Mary and Madre Chuy, live in the house along with the children and take care of 6 infants. Additionally there is a cook, teachers Sol and Luz, Benito the driver, Chris, Ann (our sweet nurse) and the continued support of two volunteer organizations, The Original Volunteers and Outreach and those that volunteer on a part time basis.
